No more low-level attacks were executed after this tragedy. From that day on, the Marauders were mainly used for bombing missions from medium altitude on targets near the Dutch, Belgian, and French coasts. These missions were often used as diversionary attacks for those of the heavy bombers. If these, for example, were to attack Germany and cross Holland on their route in, the Marauders would bomb airfields in northern France or Belgium some hours in advance. On August 19, 1943, three of these bomb groups would be in action over northern France.
Of course, the Germans made a large propaganda effort in order to exploit these mishaps of the American air force, but generally, the people in the Low Countries were more than happy to see the Americans overhead. They were a sign of the oncoming liberation. As a precautionary measure against friendly civilian casualties, it was explicitly stated in all field orders for American bomb groups that in no case would indiscriminate bombing be allowed over the Low Countries. The target had to be identified at all times.
