During dinner he allowed himself one glass of wine. For himself and his staff Rommel insisted on the same rations as the troops. In North Africa this was not always a suitable diet; for months we had no fresh vegetables and lived only on tinned stuff; moreover, the water was always brackish even in coffee or tea.
